My Design Process

1.

Understanding the Design Challenge

I begin by picking out keywords from the brief to understand what it's asking.

I often challenge the brief to help generate interesting ideas that sit outside the box.

2.

Research into the Problem/Market

Market research is important as it allows you to see what works and what doesn't, in terms of design and sales.

It also gives you a window into what aspects be improved or changed.

3.

Sketching initial thoughts and ideas

Forms, concepts, words and science get put onto paper. Multiple sketches are made of different ideas before becoming more refined.

4.

Experimenting. Iterating. Expanding.

Experiments are conducted in order to gain experience and knowledge.

A few strong ideas/solutions are chosen and developed further. Logistics, materials ect, are brought into the equation. This helps decide which design idea works best, sometimes this may be a combination of multiple solutions.

5.

Develop a design proposal

A design proposal outlines how the chosen concept fulfils the brief's requirements. It includes a concept summary, sketches and an explanation about the feasibility of the design.

6.

Ergonomincs and 3D Modeling

The chosen concept is modelled in CAD to produce a 3D sketch of the design.

Ergonomics, materials and aesthetic are taken into consideration

7.

Prototype/Testing

A prototype is crafted and material samples are produced. A scale model helps with the feasibility of the design.

Further development and experimentation can be done to solve any issues that may have come up.

8.

Refinement

Design details are finalised.

3D models and renders are produced to show context, scale and aesthetic.

Manufacturing drawings are created

9.

Production

The final design is put into production.

Branding, press-packs, documentation and photographs are created.

Presentation of design and the process behind it.
