To create a design for future generations which holds cultural significance to oneself. Reviewing your past should have an influence on the design.

generative chromatography
Mitochondrial DNA create energy for our cells to power our bodies.
the science
.The DNA which makes up the mitochondria is passed exclusively from mother to child, making it possible to track the female line back hundreds of years.
DNA chromatography is a process which reveals the unique bonding pattern of proteins which make up a strand of DNA.

Inspired by the unique patterns nature draws onto individual creatures.
Turning each into a vase, as it is an object which holds life
I N S P I R A T I O N

This vase visually shows your genetic makeup of your mitochondrial DNA.
The chromatography pattern shows the alignments of base pairs in your personal sequence.
concept
A modern way to preserve history in a personalised object
This DNA has been passed down to you from each of your female ancestors.

A chromatographic tile, unique to the owner.
The owner's chromatography pattern is arranged along the rings. Each ring symbolises a new generation in their family tree, as an ever-expanding system.

The Fibonacci Sequence
The Circle of Life
Annual growth rings of a tree

Using MAYA's nparticles to create a random arrangement of chromatography bars in the form of spheres.
Arranged along a path modelled on a cross-section of a tree
a road-map to our ancestors

MANUFACTURING
A person's chromatography pattern is taken into Fusion 360 where each tile is individually modelled, ready to export into GrabCAD
I used a Stratasys J750 3D printer to 3D print the chromatographic tiles. This allowed me to create a product with an extremely high level of accuracy and detail

PROGRESSION AND REFINEMENT

Transforming the graphic-like tile into a piece of jewelry.
Jewelry is often passed down through generations. Having a unique chromatography map in precious metal enhances the sentimentality of the heirloom.
